After Toto IV, the band's fortunes started to plummet. David Hungate left the band to focus on his solo career. The band had several drummers. In 1984, Bobby Kimball was fired from the band in aftermath of drug-related charges. However, the group continued to perform as a trio, which included Michael Porcaro and Steve Lukather.
Despite the chaos, Toto forged ahead and released Isolation, which was not as successful as IV. The band managed to release an album that was chart-topping, Kingdom of Desire, in 1992. This album marked the conclusion of the original Toto lineup and was the first to feature a new singer, Simon Phillips.

Line-up
The album's third, Turn Back, marked an reversion to the classic sextet arrangement of previous albums. It was a more ferocious, consistent effort with a harder edge than Hydra. The edgier sound of Turn Back reflected the growth of the band. Bobby Kimball's growing proficiency was evident in the vocal delivery of Joseph Williams, who had become more confident and mature. David Paich's keyboard skills were also more sophisticated, sharper and less akin to earlier efforts.
After touring to promote the album, the group recorded a live performance in Amsterdam that was released as a two-CD set called Falling In Between Live on Eagle Records. The group released their new studio album just a few months after, and went on a world tour to promote the album. During this time keyboardist Greg Phillinganes replaced Paich and bassist David Hungate quit the group to spend time with his family.
In 1998, Paich and Lukather started looking through old demos and tapes in search of an album that would feature songs that had never been recorded before. The album was released in 2001 as a double album titled Then & Now. It was the first album by the band without one single track titled "A". The album also included a previously unreleased track called "Kari-Anne".
By 2003, Toto had begun to decline in popularity. The fourth album, Old Is New, was a commercial failure, and vocalist Williams was suffering from a severe case of laryngitis which limited his singing capabilities. In addition, Hungate returned to Nashville, while drummer Leland Sklar was replaced by Shem von Schroeck.
Downes, Wetton Palmer and Howe, the original members of Asia The original Asia members met in England early in 2006 to discuss the possibility that the band could be revived. The lineup, which was minus Howe (who was working with Yes at the time), eventually became known as Toto XIV and toured extensively.
In 2010, the band reunited for another reunion tour with a slightly different line-up, including guitarists Mike Porcaro and Steve Lukather, drummer John Pierce, bassist Shannon Forrest, and multi-instrumentalists Warren Ham and Dominique Taplin. The band also had an appearance by singer Michael McDonald and a backing vocalist named Mabvuto Carver.
